Tashkent, long a major cultural center of Central Asia, has preserved many ancient and medieval monuments, while its modernist architecture of the 1960s–1980s was long excluded from heritage recognition. After Uzbekistan’s independence, this socially oriented architecture lost relevance, but it is now being reassessed as a key expression of Soviet Central Asia’s modernization and as a meaningful contribution to global modern heritage debates. This publication presents research from the Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI project, combining historical analysis, essays, and twelve building studies with strategies for conservation and adaptive reuse.
